A dental bridge bridges a gap in your mouth, replacing a missing tooth with a false tooth which is bonded to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. There are two main types of dental bridge. The most common type consists of two crowns, made of porcelain or metal, which are permanently bonded to your natural teeth either side of the space, with the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle.  The other type of bridge is an adhesive bridge, used when the teeth either side of your missing tooth are healthy.  This is a false tooth with 'wings' either side of it that are bonded to the inner surfaces of the neighbouring teeth.

To create a dental bridge, your dentist will take an impression of your mouth to create a custom made bridge to fit your mouth.  To fit the bridge your dentist will use anaesthetic to block any gum pain.  After fitting your dentist will check that it is firmly in place with a bite test.

What are the Benefits of Dental Bridges?

A Dental bridge has the benefit of offering a permanent for missing teeth that is less intrusive than an implant as it does not require surgery. if you choose a porcelain one, it is barely distinguishable from the permanent teeth.  A dental bridge will protect your existing teeth from movement too which could cause damage long term.  As well as this food could get caught in gaps, so a dental bridge removes this problem.

There are also the benefits of improving your appearance and self esteem, through having a full mouth of teeth.

What are the Alternatives to Dental Bridges?

Your first course is to talk to your dentist to see what they recommend, but dentures (full or partial) or implants could be options to consider too.  Having a comprehensive dental insurance policy can mean that you can make the right decision for your health and not let cost be an element.
